Department of Mental Health Access Helpline

Call 1-800-7WE-HELP or 1-800-793-4357 to speak with a behavioral health professional. he Access Helpline can activate mobile crisis teams to respond to adults and children who are experiencing a psychiatric or emotional crisis and are unable or unwilling to travel to receive behavioral health services. 

DC Safe 24-Hour Domestic Violence Hotline

The Trevor Project

Call 1-866-488-7386, text “start” to 678-678, or visit https://www.thetrevorproject.org/get-help/ to speak with a crisis counselor. The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) National Hotline

LGBT National Coming Out Support Hotline

Call 1-888-688-5428 to speak with an LGBTQ+ volunteer. This hotline proves a safe space to discuss concerns and questions regarding coming out for all ages.

LGBT National Youth Talkline

Call 1-800-246-7743 to speak with an LGBTQ+ volunteer. This talkline provides confidential peer support, information, and local and national resources for callers ages 25 and younger. 

LGBT National Senior Hotline

Call 1-888-234-7243 to speak with an LGBTQ+ volunteer. This hotline provides confidential peer support, information and local and national resources for callers ages 50 and above.

Trans Lifeline

Call 1-877-565-8860 to speak with a hotline operator. This hotline is open Monday through Friday from 1:00pm-9:00pm ET. Trans Lifeline is a trans-led organization that connects trans people to the community, support, and resources they need to survive and thrive.

Pride Institute

Call 833-451-2400 to speak wo the Pride Institute about addiction recovery treatment tailored towards LGBTQ+ individuals.  

Real Mama Bears

Real Mama Bears provides online communities and resources for families with LGBTQ+ family members. Some of their resources include Facebook pages, parent/allies support, advocacy resource, options for faith-based support, and affirming parent stand in.

Mama Dragons

Mama Dragons is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides peer-led support groups, educational resources, and parenting classes, in a supportive community of over 11,000 mothers of LGBTQ+ children. Mama Dragons provides programs to support healthy families by helping mothers learn to accept, affirm, and celebrate their LGBTQ+ children. It's more important than ever to know how to have courageous conversations at home, at school, in our communities, and anywhere where laws are being made that affect our families.

SMYAL

SMYAL is a DC-based youth empowerment, advocacy, and support organization. They offer affirming housing support for LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness, mental health services, and other youth programs.

Living Life Alternatives Program

Living Life Alternative's Program is DC’s first LGBTQ+ Low Barrier shelter serving homeless individuals of the LGBTQ+ community. The shelter provides case management services, job readiness training, life skills classes, psychosocial support, and health and wellness support.\

The DC Center

The DC Center provides several services for LGBTQ+ individuals including individual mental health services, group support (including trans, nonbinary, and gender queer groups), professional development, a clothing closet, and a food cabinet. You can contact them at supportdesk@thedccenter.org.

Youth and Family Information

The National Runaway Safeline

Call or text 1-800-RUNAWAY or 1-800-786-2929 to speak to a Safeline operator. You can also visit https://www.1800runaway.org/get-help to use the live chat feature, send an email, or join the forum. The National Runaway Safeline provides advice and assistance to runaways, including resources, shelter, transportation, assistance in finding counseling, and transitioning back into home life. NRS frontline staff will also act as advocates and mediators if/as needed.  

Self-Abuse Finally Ends (S.A.F.E.) Crisis Textline

Text “HOME” to 741741 on your phone or on WhatsApp. You can also visit https://www.crisistextline.org/text-us/ to use the live chat. S.A.F.E. addresses individuals coping with non-suicidal self-injury, including locally based information, support, and therapy referrals.

Parents for Peace Helpline for Radicalization

Call 884-497-3223 or email help@parents4peace.org to speak with a helpline operator. Parents for Peace takes a public health approach to extremism prevention. The confidential helpline has assisted hundreds of families and individuals from a wide range of societies struggling with different ideologies.

PEERS Online Social Skills Class

UCLA provides an online, evidence-based social skills program for teens and young adults who are interested in making and keeping friends and/or handling conflict and rejection.

Heartleaf Center

The Heartleaf Center provides various services including child intervention support, play therapy, family therapy, group therapy for parents, and more. The center accepts insurance (including Medicaid) and offers a sliding scale based on income for those unable to use insurance.

Housing and Hypothermia Shelter Hotline

Call 202-399-7093 or 311 to reach the Shelter Hotline, which is available 24/7 during hypothermia season (November 1–April 15). 

U.S. National Domestic Violence Hotline

This hotline operates 24/7 and is free and confidential. Highly trained, experienced advocates offer compassionate support, crisis intervention information, and referral services in over 170 languages, including English and Spanish.  

Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN)

RAINN is the nation’s largest organization fighting against sexual violence. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
